Dating back over 700 years, Yetminster Fair in rural Dorset attracts thousands of visitors each year. Historically of agricultural origin, the fair today is purely a social occasion encompassing the entire village, with over one hundred sideshows, craft & trade stalls and traditional dancing.
The famous Dorset Folk Group THE YETTIES have a very long and special association with Yetminster as Bonny explains:
After the success of the 'Joumey Thro' The Purbecks' video the thought was, 'Where do we go from here?'. The answer was 'Nearer to home' and from there it was a natural progression to Yetminster and it's annual Fair.
Yetminster, after all, is why we are called The Yetties. It was in Yetminster where we first met in the Scout Troop, where we first became involved in folk music, drank our first pint, chatted up our first girl friends and did our first broadcast for the BBC when we were members of the Yetminster & Ryme Intrinseca Junior Folk Dance Display Team.
Yetminster Fair and it's evening concert are therefore very special events in our calendar. We hope we've captured some of the happy atmosphere of the day on this video. Perhaps once you've seen it you will be tempted to join us on the second Saturday of July.
Be seeing you. Bonny Sartin
TABBY OAKLEY known as 'The Farmer's Friend' is an extremely popular West Country comedian of the old tradition whose association with THE YETTIES spans many years. This is the first time he has permitted an official recording of his perfomance.
